Laser Gum Treatment for Periodontal Infections

Severe gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is an infection of the tissue and bone that hold your teeth in place, and can eventually lead to tooth loss. The condition largely affects adults in their 30’s and 40’s, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NICDR), and is usually caused by:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Smoking
  • Chronic illnesses, such as diabetes
  • Certain medications
  • Genetic susceptibility

For severe cases of periodontal disease surgery may be required with the use of a scalpel and anesthetics. Oral surgery can be painful and include long recovery times depending on the severity of periodontitis. Laser gum treatment, like that used by Dr. Dyer and his staff, has proven to be a less invasive alternative for periodontal infections and has a faster recovery time and better results.

Laser Treatment Options At Fort Bend Periodontist and Implantology

Fort Bend Periodontics and Implantology is dedicated to bringing their patients the best care possible. That means investing in state-of-the-art technology and staying at the leading edge of new techniques.

Dr. Dyer is a leader in the field of laser dentistry, so you can rest assured that he will provide you with exactly the care you need to improve the health of your gums and teeth.

With periodontal laser treatment, Dr. Dyer uses a laser, not a scalpel, to access and remove the inflamed gum tissue from around the root of the tooth. When the infected tissue is removed and the root is exposed, the root scaling begins. This involves scraping off the calculus and plaque built up below the gumline and around the root. Dr. Dyer then smooths the root with instruments to remove any rough spots that might attract bacteria and cause future infections. The area between the gum and the root can then regenerate during the healing process.

Thanks to our hard and soft tissue lasers, Dr. Dyer is able to provide precise, comfortable treatment faster and with better results than traditional oral surgeries. With laser dentistry, many treatments no longer require anesthesia. There is little to no swelling and recovery time is faster than other methods.

At Fort Bend Periodontics and Implantology, Dr. Bret Dyer and our team are ready to help you restore your smile to full health, function, and beauty.
